2008 ICT Tour - Bangalore, INDIA

Saturday 29th Nov to Sunday 7th December 2008

Overview
Bangalore, officially Bengaluru, is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. Located on the Deccan Plateau in the south-eastern part of Karnataka, Bangalore is India's sixth most populous city and fifth-most populous urban agglomeration.

Today, as a large and growing metropolis in the developing world, Bangalore is home to some of the most well-recognized colleges and research institutions in India, and has the secondhighest literacy rate for an Indian metropolis.

Bangalore is known as the Silicon Valley of India owing to its pre-eminent position as the leading contributor to India's IT industry. Bangalore has developed into one of India's major economic hubs and was mentioned by CNN as one of the "best places to do business in the wired world"

Objectives
The 2030 Vision for the BPO sector in Kenya is to be “the top offshoring destination in Africa”. The BPO sector is also expected to become the sector of choice for employment among youth and young professionals. In this regard, Kenya will move quickly to establish the necessary capacity in this sector, as a number of African countries have already built up sizeable BPO capacity

To achieve the vision for the BPO sector, Kenya will pursue four major strategies:

Focusing BPO services along geographic areas, industrial processes and different industry segments;
Building an IT supplier base of international repute by encouraging world-class IT suppliers to establish offices locally;
Attracting Multinational company subsidiaries(captive firms) and foreign BPO players to Kenya; and
Building the capacity of local players by supporting entrepreneurs who invest in the industry.

Following our successful tour to Silicon Valley USA in September 2007, we are organizing a one week visit to Bangalore in India in December 2008. We believe that for Kenya to succeed in outsourcing we have to visit the outsourcing capital of the world and learn the following from the best:

Building technology parks;
Training knowledge workers;
Developing world-class software;
Managing call-centres and back-offices;
Servicing clients in developed nations.

Our goal is to visit and establish relationships with various companies based in Bangalore such as GenPact, HCL BPO, IBM Daskh, InfoSys, Tata, WiPro, NASSCOM, Software Technology Parks of India, MphasiS, amongst others, that have excelled in the above areas.
